Creating an East Coast Collection
Ancient trees grow in diverse environments around the globe. Each species of tree has a place of origin where they thrive. To allow the forest to flourish, creating as many regional-specific collections as possible is important to reforest these most important trees in the environments where they flourish best.
Archangel Ancient Tree Archive is doing this work out west and around the world; our next stop is the East Coast.
Your donation today of any amount will provide the funding assistance to support the necessary expeditions to identify, collect, propagate, and reforest a collection of native East Coast Champion trees.
You can provide a path to replenishment for different East Coast environments, help combat the effects of climate change, and restore historical ecosystems.

OUR PROCESS
Identify & Collect
Archangel will research and identify the top five most important Native East Coast Champion Trees to clone and propagate.
Our Process:
- Collection Permission
- Material Collection
- Material Inspection and Shipment

Develop – Tissue Culture Protocol
Research and Development
- The R&D phase is the longest of the propagation process
- R&D includes the development of a species-specific propagation protocol
- Trials and analysis of propagation methods
Archangel will begin by acquiring all the supplies needed, including rootstock material for grafting and any plant material collected from designated East Coast Champion Trees. The estimated timeline for this phase is 2 -3 months for identification and analysis and 6 -18 months for propagation trials.
Culture Maintenance
Once we establish the appropriate propagation protocol for a tree species, we will maintain an inventory of plantlets to supply nursery partners with the material they need to propagate and grow the clones and seedlings.
Propagation & Restoration
Through Archangel’s network of partner nurseries and tree planting non-profits, there will be a built-in propagation system and planting demand for our East Coast Champion Tree clones.

Nursery & Propagation Partners
We are currently establishing partnerships with nurseries and propagation facilities nationwide that can take our tissue culture material and help us scale production to meet our target of one million East Coast Champion Tree clones propagated by 2035.
Tree Planting Partners
We have also developed (and will continue to develop) long-term relationships and partnerships with tree planting nonprofits and organizations, ensuring enough demand for the East Coast Champion Trees we produce.
