Smithsonian.com asks if cloning giant redwoods can save the planet. While not a whole-hearted endorsement of our efforts, they certainly think that “the spirit behind this idea is still quite good”, and further go on to mention that figuring out which plants would be best at trapping and storing carbon dioxide is a field of ongoing research.
One thing is for sure, the native range of the coast redwoods is shrinking – there is a movie on the Smithsonian.com site showing just that. Our planting of these great old trees around the world will ensure they’ll be around for a long time.
