Archangel Ancient Tree Archive brought its Tree School to The Greenspire School (TGS) in Traverse City, MI. TGS is a unique middle school with a mission to “provide an ecologically relevant and academically rigorous program grounded in direct experiences that develop skills to facilitate lifelong learning and nurture ethical citizenship.”
The curriculum and programming at TGS allows for partnerships with nonprofit organizations like AATA. Studying nature is a core element of this charter school’s curriculum.
Archangel’s teaching facilitator, Jake Milarch, taught students to collect cuttings of Black Willow (Salix nigra), and then walked them through how to propagate trees. They also planted Champion Tree clones on the Greenspire campus. The students even learned about dendrochronology, the technique of dating by using the characteristic patterns of annual growth rings in timber and tree trunks.
